How to Find Your Partner’s Ring Size

Whilst figuring out your partner’s ring size in secret may seem like a daunting task, there are some helpful tips to gauge the range, or to get an accurate estimate for the size you are looking for. It’s worth noting, to help put your minds at ease, we find it almost inevitable that you will need to resize the engagement ring if you are trying to keep the proposal a secret. That’s why we offer the following two services…

Free Ring Resizing Service

If you’re trying to keep your proposal secret you can guess the ring size and once you’ve proposed we will resize your engagement ring free of charge. Worst-case scenario, it is always better to go larger than needed so you can slip the ring over the finger in that special moment. The ring can always be resized later.

Placeholder Ring

At Jacqueline and Edward we offer a Proposal Ring, where you can purchase a placeholder ring to propose with so you and your partner can then choose the engagement ring together. This is a popular option for couples opting for our bespoke engagement ring service, as they treasure the journey of designing a ring together.

Alternatively, there are a number of things you can do to get a ballpark figure for your loved one’s ring size:

  • Ask their friends for advice – Enlist the help of one of your partner’s close friends or a family member who may have access to their jewellery collection. They can discreetly borrow a ring or enquire about their ring size without arousing suspicion.

  • Borrow one of their rings – If your partner has a ring they wear on the ring finger of their left hand, try to borrow it for a short period of time. Remember, the fingers on your dominant hand will always be slightly bigger, so if they are right handed and intend to wear the engagement ring on their left hand as tradition dictates, you should go for a size bigger. You can then either trace the inside of the ring on a piece of paper or bring it into our workshop to determine the size.

  • Take a peek in their jewellery box – This could be a great way of accessing some of the rings that fit your partner’s finger, but that they won’t necessarily miss if they don’t wear them everyday.

Ready-To-Go Rings

  • Consult a friend with a similar hand size – If one of your partner’s friends has a similar hand size, you can ask them for their size as a reference. This method is less precise but can provide a rough estimate.

  • No clue? If you have no idea, a general description of their hands (small, medium, large, prominent knuckles, etc.) would give us a steer and then you can resize after the proposal.

  • Propose with a placeholder ring – we offer a Proposal Ring service, so the element of surprise is maintained. After the proposal, you can shop for the actual engagement ring together, ensuring you get the perfect fit.

If the proposal isn’t a surprise but the ring is, you can use our ring sizing service so you get the perfect fit first time.

Don’t forget, after you propose, if you find the engagement ring doesn’t fit, we offer a free ring resizing service for engagement rings purchased on Jacqueline & Edward so there’s np pressure to get it right first time.
