Mokume Gane at Jacqueline & Edward

Mastering the Japanese metalworking technique of Mokume Gane has become something of an obsession for us here at Jacqueline & Edward. We love the way it challenges us in the workshop and we love the reaction our Mokume Gane rings get.

We feel a genuine connection to the ancient and pioneering traditions of Japanese craftsmanship every time we work on a new Mokume Gane billet, and we do so with respect for those traditions. We also enjoy the technical challenge Mokume Gane represents – a challenge avoided by many, Mokume Gane being very much the Mount Everest of handmade precious metalworking.

It feels like our journey into the world of Mokume Gane has only just begun, with each new commission pushing us to create ever more complex designs, new and striking combinations of metals, and new patterns – Mokume Gane is always a challenge, and is always one we are happy to accept.

Japanese history of Mokume Gane

Mokume Gane, meaning “wood grain metal,” is a Japanese metalworking technique developed by a gifted craftsman named Denbei Shoami (1651–1728). Originating during the Edo period, it was first used for samurai sword fittings, showcasing layered patterns resembling wood grain created by fusing different metals like gold, silver, and copper.

“Swords were considered highly utilitarian and highly decorative at once. The finest artists and metalworkers of the day worked side by side to create swords of great beauty and remarkable functionality.” Steven Jacob

More recently, the technique, reflecting wealth and status, expanded to include jewellery and decorative items, especially following its decline in the manufacture and creation of swords during the 20th century.

The ancient art of Mokume Gane is a traditional Japanese metalworking technique which involves layering different metals to create unique and distinctive designs. Our ethical Mokume Gane made-to-order wedding rings are handmade in our Yorkshire workshop.

The Artistry, The Making

The process of creating our Mokume Gane wedding rings is long, meticulous and intricate. It takes several days of work in our Yorkshire workshop before we even begin to make the ring, so as you can imagine, this makes each piece even more special as a result.

Care Guide

It takes a little extra care to keep your Mokume Gane Ring looking its best. Regular wear can burnish, or polish, the matt surface of the ring, which tends to reduce the striking visual impact of the different coloured layers of metal. Burnishing of the matt surface in this way is totally natural and unavoidable with everyday wear. A few wipes with an abrasive pad will restore its original matt appearance and allow the alternating layered patterns to shine through.

Mokume Gane with silver should be cared for like silver jewellery, avoiding bleach, strong chemicals, sulphur, and chlorine to prevent tarnishing and corrosion.
