Ethics and sustainability is a sliding scale and we certainly don’t profess to be perfect, but we’re on a journey to ensure we use the most ethical materials available. We believe in using materials from recycled sources to ensure no further mining of the earth’s resources is needed to create our pieces. We believe there are enough materials in the world around us already. Our insistence on using recycled precious metals and gemstones dissociates our work from the often harmful humanitarian effects of mining as well as the ecological destruction which can be caused by mining the earth’s resources.

We only use recycled gold and recycled platinum in our work.  In some instances we even make the alloys ourselves so as to reduce the carbon footprint of buying pre-made recycled and ethical precious metal alloys.  We collect as much of the lemel (e.g. filings) and offcuts as we can, which are directly re-used in our jewellery to reduce waste.  Any precious metal which escapes this process is collected and refined so it can be used again.  We’re also happy to upcycle your old jewellery in the creation of a new piece in order to help reuse, reduce and recycle material that’s already available.

Just like our precious metals we only work with recycled diamonds and other gemstones like rubies, sapphires and emeralds, or lab-grown diamonds and gemstones. And just like our precious metals, we believe the earth has already provided us with enough of these resources without the need for further mining. Which option you choose will be down to your own personal ethics and sustainability values which we’d love to discuss with you if you’re unsure which option to choose. Recycled diamonds and gemstones have a limited carbon footprint, whereas lab-grown diamonds and gemstones often cross the globe to be cut, polished and graded.  They also require energy to produce. However, we feel these choices are the most ethical available.

We believe part of being sustainable is only making what is needed. We live on a planet of finite resources, but often we treat it like our resources are infinite. That’s why all our jewellery is handmade and made-to-order. There’s little waste in the making process and every piece has a home to go to as soon as it’s been made, minimising the use of our natural materials and lightening our footprint on the planet. There are occasions when we create prototypes for new designs, but we don’t waste these, we make them available in our Ready-To-Go collection.

As we strive to be mindful of the earth’s limited resources, our engagement rings and wedding rings are sent to you in a beautiful natural wooden ring box. We make our ring boxes from fallen tree branches foraged from the forest floor which are then hand carved locally by our very own Grandpa Ray.  We are very selective over both what and how much we forage, being mindful that fallen branches and dead wood logs are important hibernaculum for mammals, amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates.  These ring boxes are then packaged in recycled and recyclable cardboard boxes and a waterproof but recycled compostable plastic.  For all of our contouring and ring sizing services we use reusable fabric pouches as we aim to limit waste and protect our oceans.
