A Guide to Ethical Engagement Ring Styles

When it comes to engagement rings, there are a vast array of styles and settings to choose from, each with its own unique charm and personality. The term ‘style’ is used to describe the design of the stone(s) in an engagement ring. For example a solitaire engagement ring features one centre stone compared to a trilogy engagement ring which as the name suggests, features three stones within the design. Setting, on the other hand, refers to the way in which the gemstones are secured or mounted, influencing how much light can interact with the stone, and determining the overall sparkle.

Join us to explore various engagement ring styles including solitaire, halo, trilogy and pavé, as well as specific settings you can choose from to make the ring uniquely yours. All of our engagement rings are handmade-to-order using recycled precious metals, minimising environmental impact and reducing the need for destructive mining practices. Equally, our recycled diamonds, lab-grown diamonds and gemstones (moissanite, sapphires, rubies and emeralds for example) offer an ethical and sustainable alternative to newly mined ones.

Solitaire Engagement Rings

The Glendevon: Handmade Platinum Tulip Setting Solitaire Engagement Ring with Pavé Set Shoulders

Solitaire engagement rings are classic and timeless, featuring a single dazzling centre stone. These rings symbolise elegance and simplicity, allowing the focus to remain on the stunning centre diamond or gemstone.  A solitaire ring can be accented with channel set side stones like in the example above.

At Jacqueline & Edward, we offer solitaire rings crafted with either sustainably sourced recycled or lab-grown diamonds and gemstones like emeralds, sapphires and rubies. Working with these types of stones ensures the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility. Alternatively, you might want to consider lab-grown moissanite which is a cheaper alternative to both recycled and lab-grown diamonds but to the naked eye, looks just like the real thing. A few popular solitaire settings

Four Claw – Fewer claws allow the diamond to really sparkle, this design is perfect for round diamonds or four cornered diamond shapes like emerald or princess cuts.

Six Claw – Here, the claws are thinner, and pair well with round brilliant, marquise or oval cuts. The extra claws offer security for the stone, making it a great choice for someone with an active lifestyle.

Recycled Royal Crown Solitaire Engagement Ring

Bezel Set – This offers the most support to the centre stone, as it uses a rubover (a metal casing) around the perimeter. This pairs well with softer stones like emeralds too.

Halo Engagement Rings

The Massan: Handmade 18ct White Gold Diamond or Moissanite Halo Engagement Ring

Halo engagement rings exude a captivating allure by encircling a centre stone with a halo of smaller diamonds or gemstones, hence the name ‘halo’. This style enhances the brilliance and size of the centre stone, creating a mesmerising effect. Halo rings can be traced back to the Georgian era from 1714-1837, at which time, due to the price of diamonds, smaller diamonds were used to accentuate the centre diamond to make it appear bigger. This design resurfaced again during the 1920s and 1930 and has a vintage look and feel to it.

Traditional halo engagement rings are designed so the smaller halo stones sit flush around the centre stone with the centre stone typically using a claw setting to enhance the brilliance and sparkle.

Pavé Engagement Rings

Pavé originates from the French word ‘paved’ (as in a paved surface), and refers to small diamonds closely set together creating the appearance of a continuous shimmering surface. The aim is to enhance the centre stone, so combining a halo and pavé style, will further enhance the overall brilliance of the centre stone, perfect for those who love sparkle and want a vintage feel.

Trilogy Engagement Rings

Handmade 18ct Gold Trilogy Ring

The Ballindean: Ethical 18ct Gold Diamond or Moissanite Trilogy Engagement Ring

A trilogy engagement ring traditionally features three main gemstones set side-by-side on the ring’s band. The three stones represent the past, present and future of your relationship, symbolising the journey you have shared and the life you will build together. Traditionally the centre stone is usually larger than the two side stones, drawing attention to the main focal point.

The word trilogy comes from the Greek word trilogía meaning three interlinking stories. There are no rules when it comes to using diamonds or other gemstones, or the cut of the gemstones. It offers lots of flexibility in how it is designed, from traditional to contemporary.

Take a look at a few of the different ways a trilogy engagement can be designed…

Shared Claw Setting –  In a shared claw setting, two or more of the gemstones share the same claws. This style minimises the amount of metal visible and maximises the visibility of the stones, creating a cohesive and unified look.

Traditional claw setting – This is the most classic and popular setting for trilogy rings. Each of the three gemstones is held in place by claws (also known as prongs) that secure the stones while allowing maximum light exposure. Claw settings create a timeless and elegant look. And as with the Array, a trilogy ring doesn’t need to feature the same shaped stone, you can use a combination of oval, pear or round to create your own unique design.

Contemporary bezel setting – In a bezel setting, each gemstone is surrounded by a metal rim or collar that holds it securely in place, this setting style can give the ring a contemporary and sleek appearance while offering extra protection to the stones – perfect for an outdoorsy or active lifestyle.
